Dancing for Democracy
In the face of ICE’s violence and abuse of basic human rights: I want more democracy.
In the face of the Trump administration’s corruption: I want more democracy.
In the face of attempts to gerrymander permanent majorities: I want more democracy.
Democracy requires participation, but it also requires stamina. Joy helps sustain that.
Amid a conversation about how to bring more joy into our organizing, our volunteer Mike, a professional dance instructor, suggested Dancing for Democracy. Using his skills, he and his partner Nastasya taught a bachata lesson that brought people together at a time when connection feels urgent. I’m grateful to both of them for sharing their talents so generously.
Politics is uncomfortable. It requires hard conversations, and sometimes leadership means disappointing people. It’s vulnerable work, and requires trust. Getting on the dance floor felt like a small version of that. I’m not a great dancer, but leadership also isn’t about staying comfortable; it’s about showing up anyway. Dancing for Democracy was vulnerable and required trust, and it was both necessary and joyful.
Thank you to everyone who came. There are many ways to build this movement; dancing, writing postcards, hosting conversations, or simply talking to your neighbors. There is a place for everyone in this campaign, and we hope you’ll support it in whatever ways feel most meaningful— and joyful— to you.
