Get Out the Vote

This past Sunday, I knocked doors for Manchester municipal candidates. Hitting the doors reaffirmed that the strength of our democracy doesn’t come from Washington or our leaders— it comes from us. From neighbors who take time out of their weekend to talk about what’s happening in their community and those who care enough to ask questions and listen.

I met Mary, a grandmother who spends her limited free time volunteering and showing up at every protest she can. She told me she worries about the world her grandkids are growing up in, but keeps showing up because doing something, even if it’s small, still matters.

Local government is built on people who show up. Off-year elections don’t draw the same crowds, but the decisions made in them shape all of our lives.

Down-ballot races may not have as high a voter turnout as federal elections, but they determine who’s in the room when critical choices are made— from school funding, to investments in public safety, sidewalks and roads, to building affordable housing.

NH municipal elections are less than two weeks away. If you’re wondering what action you can take next— knock doors and help get out the vote. Make sure communities with elections this November are informed and that you and your neighbors have a plan to cast your ballots.
