16 Days to Go: Childcare is a human right

With just sixteen days left until the primary, I am using each day to discuss an issue I have highlighted on the campaign trail. For Day 16, I am highlighting my plans to ensure everyone has access to affordable, high-quality childcare.

When we talk about the foundations of a strong economy, we often point to roads, good schools, and housing. But there’s another form of infrastructure just as critical, one that supports every industry in New Hampshire: childcare.

Without affordable, reliable childcare, parents can’t work, businesses can’t hire, and children lose out on the early learning experiences that set them up for success.

Despite the urgent need for affordable childcare, New Hampshire faces a severe shortage. Between 2017 and 2024, the state lost nearly 13 percent of its licensed childcare capacity for children under five.

Last year, I toured a childcare facility in Rochester with its Executive Director, Cora-Lynn Hoppe, and Family Service Coordinator, Anne Grassie. This center, like many others in our district, was a shining light of warmth and joy.

But too many New Hampshire families can’t afford what it takes to send their children to facilities like the one in Rochester. The average cost of sending two children to daycare in New Hampshire is $32,000 a year. That’s about a third of the median household income in our state.

So here’s my solution: We need to cap childcare costs at 7% of a family’s income. We also need to ensure every childcare worker earns a living wage so facilities can recruit workers, retain staff, keep classrooms open, and give families the options they need to give their children a strong start.

I would also be one of the few working moms in Congress! I know firsthand how hard it is to find and afford childcare, so I’m going to make this issue central to my legislative agenda.
