Affordable Housing: A glimmer of hope
Almost every day since I’ve launched this campaign, I’ve heard the same thing from families with young kids, college students, and older people: “We love this state, but we’re not sure we can afford to stay.”
Even if this isn’t your personal story, chances are you know someone who’s struggling with the high cost of housing in this country.
If you've been following this campaign, you know I'm often critical of Congress, and for good reason. I also know that even in broken systems, there are bright spots and reasons to feel hopeful. Bipartisan housing legislation is one of them.
Congress recently passed a bill designed to remove barriers to building more homes and lower the cost of housing. Donald Trump refused to sign in—demanding that Congress pass the SAVE Act, a bill critics say would make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to vote.
Here’s the good news: it doesn’t matter if Trump signed it because after 10 days of sitting idle on his desk, it became law anyway!
Wonderful things are still possible in this country!
The bad news is that our politics are still too often driven by people who seem more interested in political leverage than solving everyday problems. That's the kind of politics that helped create this housing crisis, and it won't solve it.
We all deserve to be able to have a community and place to call home!
I know there's a better way. It starts with listening to different perspectives, understanding the root causes of our challenges, and bringing people together around practical solutions. Housing doesn't stand alone. It's connected to public schools, childcare, transportation, jobs, and the strength of our local communities.
I’m pro passing good laws, regardless of who gets the credit. I want to take action that will empower local builders, invest in our communities and infrastructure, crack down on land holding of single family homes, and promote pathways to all different kinds of housing for everyone!
Solving the housing crisis means standing up to corporate greed and outdated rules and standing up for the people who make our communities strong. Let’s stand up and give everyone a fair shot a a safe, affordable place to call home!
