10 Days to Go: Ending the War in Iran

With just ten days until the primary, I am using each day to discuss an issue I have highlighted on the campaign trail. For Day 10, I am highlighting the need to promote peace and global stability.

The greatest responsibility of our federal government is to protect the welfare of the people who call this country home.

As a member of Congress, I’ll never relent in my commitment to promoting peace and stability around the world.

Since February, we’ve been engaged in a dangerous and reckless war with Iran that was started by our own president, Donald Trump.

18 Americans have died, thousands of Iranians have been killed, and the livelihoods of people around the world have been threatened. Whatever instability was present in the region beforehand is even worse now, and Trump is showing no signs of ending this war.

If Trump won’t get us out of this war, Congress needs to do so by immediately passing legislation limiting Trump’s ability to take further military action against Iran.

We have entered a period where the speed of decision-making is accelerating, while the guardrails that prevent catastrophic miscalculation are weaker than ever. This combination should terrify every American.

Hereʼs what I propose to do in Congress to end this war and build peace at home and abroad:

  • Take back Congressʼs authority to declare war.

  • Fight for legislation explicitly prohibiting funding for any unauthorized offensive military operation against Iran in defense appropriation legislation.

  • Pass legislation prohibiting the US military from using artificial intelligence technology when targeting lethal strikes.

  • Push to re-ratify the New START treaty and support efforts to reduce nuclear arsenals in the US and around the world.

  • Pass “Back-from-the-Brink” legislation that would ensure that no president has unilateral authority to launch a nuclear strike.

  • Invest in international aid by restoring Trump and Elon Muskʼs reckless cuts to USAID.

We cannot lose focus, and we must elect leaders who recognize that building peace at home and peace abroad is what makes us all safer.
