9 Days to Go: Fighting for our Rights

With just nine days until the primary, I am using each day to discuss an issue I have highlighted on the campaign trail. For Day 9, I am highlighting the need to fight unequivocally for our rights.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Donald Trump’s two presidencies, it’s this: Our rights are never as safe as we think they are. From reproductive freedom to LGBTQ+ rights, these rights were won with blood, and we must defend them tooth and nail.

Rights that generations before us fought for have been rolled back, challenged in court, and put back up for debate. We can’t take anything for granted, especially with Donald Trump in the White House.

Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are not negotiable. Donald Trump and anti-choice Republicans have no business inserting themselves into some of the most personal decisions a person can make.

No politician should stand between a person and their doctor. That’s why I will fight to protect the right to abortion, defend access to contraception, and oppose any attempt, state or federal, to roll back reproductive healthcare. I’ll also fight to enshrine Roe v. Wade as federal law and repeal the discriminatory Hyde Amendment so we end this debate once and for all.

But Republicans aren’t just attacking our right to make our own choices. They’re also trying to tell us who we can and cannot be. Everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, safe, and celebrated no matter who they are, where they live, or who they love.

A lot of politicians find their way to LGBTQ+ rights in June. They put rainbow-colored pictures on their social media profiles, march in a couple of parades, release a statement or two, and follow it up with silence for the next eleven months.

But Republicans don’t limit their efforts to take away LGBTQ+ rights to the month of June. They fight year-round, 24/7, 365, to attack our neighbors, which is why I promise to fight for the LGBTQ+ community in Congress. Not just during Pride month, every single day.

Whether or not they’re printed on it, these rights are on the ballot. I’m ready to fight as hard as I can to defend them, and I think you are too. So let’s take the fight to Donald Trump, Congressional Republicans, and right-wing judges all across the country.

Let’s win this fight together.
