Carleigh’s Statement on the Government Shutdown
Today, Republicans in Congress and Speaker Johnson chose partisan games over the people they serve, and shut down the government. Instead of working with Democrats to pass a bipartisan budget that lowers costs and protects health care, they walked away and now Granite Staters are paying the price. This is the latest consequence of decades of dysfunction and gridlock in Washington, where too many in Congress have put politics and power ahead of governing. Republicans hold the gavel, but every member of Congress bears responsibility for the breakdown.
In New Hampshire, that means families are missing paychecks, services we rely on are coming to a halt, and health care costs are set to skyrocket as Republicans fight to gut Medicaid and impose barriers to affordable coverage. At a time when working people are already stretched thin, Republicans, who have total control of the government, are making life harder and more expensive.
This race in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District could not be more important. Holding this seat is critical to flipping the House and breaking the Republican stranglehold that brought us here. Granite Staters deserve leaders who put people ahead of politics, and who will fight to keep the government open, protect health care access, and put working families first.
