HATCh Literacy Event
On Saturday, the Hampton Area Alliance for Thriving Children (HATCh), which I help lead along with a group of incredible local advocates, educators, activists, and parents, held its second annual literacy fair at Winnacunnet High School. Over 100 families came to get free books, make buttons and art projects, sign a literacy pledge, and visit the Gather mobile grocery store bus where they could choose from a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared meals, egg, milk, bread, and other staples—all for free!

Why I support a Data Center Moratorium
I am livid. Once again, Republicans in our state government are putting Big Tech ahead of the health and welfare of NH residents. On Tuesday, the Republican majority in the State House Committee on Municipal and County Government voted to recommend a bill infringing on the ability of local governments to regulate the construction of data centers in their towns and cities.

I am deeply disturbed by the reports I am reading from the Sununu Youth Detention Center in Manchester, and it is long past time for federal authorities to step in and address the appalling lack of oversight and accountability by the relevant state agencies overseeing the facility and its staff.
Gutting Shipyard union puts our national security at risk
The Trump administration has terminated union contracts with two unions at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The administration says they are cutting the legs out from under federal workers and denying them the right to union representation in the interest of national security, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Alana Schaeffer, president of the Portsmouth Metal Trades Council, whose union is currently shielded by a court injunction, knows the true story: this action hurts national security. As Schaeffer put it: “our workers don’t know if they’re going to wake up tomorrow and they’re going to have also lost their rights.” That level of instability and uncertainty impacts job performance and workplace safety.

These types of large, community-oriented businesses are rare in today’s digital-first economy. I am deeply concerned that the ouster of Artie T. portends a shift in Market Basket’s priorities towards a strategy that maximizes corporate profits at the expense of workers and customers.

Both familiar faces and new friends from the Durham/UNH community joined us in our Café takeover in the early afternoon to talk politics and possibilities.
